The place is packed on a Thursday night! Tonnes of people waiting and lots of people sitting at this little tiny place. So packed, I don't even feel comfortable taking a photo. Take-out it is! (I must apologize here for the quality of photos - there are no excuses but I was tired and left the camera on landscape mode. I know, lame. It'll never happen again!).
Tuna and Salmon Sashimi - $11.95
I have to admit that I have gotten frozen tuna on one occasion from Minori but today the tuna and salmon sashimi is excellent. Cool, super sweet and goes down like a fine wine. Wild sockeye salmon of course. I've said it twice but I'll say it thrice - wild salmon or nothing when it comes to sashimi.
Spider Roll - $7.25
On the pricey side but it's a giant roll covered in sweet soy sauce and fish roe. The soft shell crab (yes, you eat the shell) is deep-fried and rolled with imitation crab, cucumber and avocado into this monstrosity. The rice is seasoned well and the roll itself, although massive, stays intact. Excellent.
Combo D (Vegetable Combo) - $8.50
Yam Tempura Roll, Cucumber Roll and Asparagus Roll
A little pricey for vegetables (another 45 cents gets you the rolls below) but at least it's good. 3-5 large pieces of deep-fried yam tempura rolled with some avocado and cucumber. I like that the tempura is still warm while the rest of the roll is cool. The cucumber and asparagus rolls are good but plain - I could do without these but they're on the plate so I'll eat them.
Combo B - $8.95
Dynamite Roll, Salmon Roll and Tuna Roll
I've just realized that all of the big rolls have deep-fried items in them - not good for the waistline but at least it's delicious. The dynamite roll is no exception - crunchy prawn tempura (2 of them!) rolled in nicely seasoned rice. Yum. The salmon and tuna rolls are plain but good for what it is.Minori might not be authentic Japanese but the ingredients and techniques stay true to the Japanese form - fresh and carefully-made. Mr. Piglet and I probably won't ever dine in as the ambiance is lacking and the service, although friendly, is slow but take-out is the way to go. And don't just walk in, order and wait - phone ahead of time to place your order and then arrive 10 min after the estimate they give you and you'll be good to go. Bon appetite!
Pros:
- Free parking
- Friendly service
- Take-out available
- Good food
- Moderate pricing
- Busy on any given night
- Service is friendly but slow
- Estimations as to when food is ready for take-out is hit or miss - most of the time it takes longer than they estimate

This is my go-to sushi place when I want simple, unsophisticated sushi. They have mastered the California roll and all the other basic sushi. I'm a stickler for Miso Soup, and this place has nailed it. The service is top-notch, the wait staff is consistently polite and efficient, which I always appreciate, and I never wait more than 15 minutes for my order to be on the table. Highly recommend this adorable little restaurant. Great value too!
ReplyDeleteWent there for dinner tonight with my mom and sister. Pretty small place so we were glad to get a booth. There was a high volume of take-out coming out of this place, a very good sign. A lot of the customers seemed like regulars which was pretty cool.
ReplyDeleteoh, i have to add that There was only one lady there for service so it was a bit slow but the place was warm and relaxed so we just sat back, drank tea and chatted.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I've only had really friendly service here. Definitely a nice neighbourhood place and pretty good food too.
