Hipsters - what are they? What do they look like? How do they think? What do they eat? To explore the mysterious world of the hipster, one will start with the Red Wagon Cafe.
Red Wagon Cafe - Vancouver, BC
Located in East Vancouver, this little cafe was featured in the hit show Diners, Drive Ins and Dives. And what kind of place is this? Well, it's a diner famous for breakfast (pulled pork pancakes!!!) but it also features some great dinner items that Mr. Piglet and I partook in.
We step in and we're in Portland???? Complete with hipster server, old oblong shaped plates, homestyle decor and even situated underneath old apartments as much of the eateries in Portland are, the piglets have found home away from home at home. I'm telling you now, these meals are not for the faint or weak of heart - these are greasy, heavy and gut-busting meals that fill the pot belly and this sandwich is no exception.
Croque Madame - grilled ham and swiss sandwich, bechamel, sunny egg on top with fries on the side
Thank you Red Wagon for re-introducing us to the grilled cheese. I forgot how good the simple things could be and how they could be better. Mr. Piglet had no trouble gobbling this down in no time.
My choice? I saw this on the menu and knew I had to have it.
Crisp Pork Belly Sandwich - pickled vegetables, jalapeno, cilantro, mayo, baguette and chips
This is a grease-dripping Asian influenced delicious mess. Many napkins died in the consumption of this sandwich. The pork is crispy, oily and salty goodness, a perfect juxtaposition with the pickled vegetables and mayo. I have to admit that my mom's pickled vegetables in her banh mi (the Vietnamese sandwich this is based on) has a better depth of flavor but this one is not bad. I love the chips! They're homemade and with a sprinkle of salt, it's the perfect original chip.
We'll definitely have to do a return visit as the pulled pork pancakes and trucker breakfast call to us. Be ready to wait if you decide to visit as lineups for breakfast/brunch on the weekends go around to the side of the building. Bon appetite!
Frosted cup for the beer... it's the little things that make this place great.
