Mr. Piglet and I have a few hours to spare in Richmond - what to do? Eat of course! So we head off to No. 3 Road and see the newest/second location of Kam Do and decide to drop in for a few buns before our gym classes start. Might as well carbo/fat load before burning it up in cardio kickboxing! It evens out, right? Ha.
Love the smell of bakery. Like I said before, this scent should be bottled and sold in department stores everywhere. Anyways, Kam Do offers up the regular delicious stuff like BBQ Pork buns, Pineapple buns, Cocktail buns, etc but we found some originals to try out.
Oh, I didn't get a chance to even smell these since these never saw the light of day - I turned my back for 3 minutes and they were gone down Mr. Piglet's pie hole. *sigh*
Do you see the grease dripping from it??? Holy smokes! It's like they took a syringe and just injected this thing with oil! It should really be called a "Deep-fried oil-jammed wiener bun". I'm usually quite agreeable with anything deep-fried but man oh man, they just ruined a good thing. Just get the original version and save yourself the calories and heartache of having a bad bun. Even Mr. Piglet who normally loves everything agrees with me on this one. In fact, there were a lot of deep fried items available - if they're close to this atrocity, I'd skip it. NEXT!
I think all of their new items are on sale... everything else looks to be $1.25+. This monstrosity tastes just like a regular delicious egg tart but just bigger. At a dollar, this thing is a steal since it's massive! Get it while you can!
The real draw to Kam Do are these pastry delights - light flaky crust on the outside and sweet jelly-like winter melon-flavored substance on the inside. These cakes are a traditional Chinese pastry made with almond paste, winter melon and sesame with some versions also using Chinese five spice powder. Mommy Piglet wholly believes Kam Do makes THE BEST version. She loves it so much so that she hand-carried several dozens of these on a flight to Toronto (to the delight of her relatives) and several dozens were also a part of my sister's traditional dowry for her wedding. Very subtle flavors and to the Western palate, they might be too subtle but for those familiar in the Chinese pastry ways, this is a must try.
Pros:
Delicious baked goods - very good for the most part
Price is on par with other bakeries - hovers around $1.25 to $1.30
