A wise owl at work said he had some amazing, nay the best ever, apple tarts from a bakery in Richmond and immediately, this Piglet needed to see what the big deal was. New Town is located in a strip mall across from Richmond Centre, so I parked in the mall and crossed the street. As I was crossing, I saw a young man holding a white steamed bun filled with some type of meaty goodness and wondered where he got it... The mystery was solved when I walked into New Town.
When you walk in, the smell of warm bakery hits you, like nestling into a warm heavenly blanket. I wish they could bottle this bakery smell and sell it - Eau de Sweet Sweet Pastry - I'd totally use it. It looks like bare bones in here but we're not here for a sit down meal, we're here for a good bun!
Apple Tarts - 5.25 for 1/2 dozen, and 9 for a full dozen (I think but correct me if I'm wrong)
Light, flaky with just a sprinkle of sugar on top. These remind me of apple strudels but are much better since they're not too sweet and much lighter. They are as good as the wise owl said and definitely worth the walk/trek over to try.
A variety of other pastries we're also going to try - BBQ Pork Bun, Cocktail Bun, Egg Tarts, Wiener Bun and Taro Turnover - all a loonie each, maybe a little more for the turnover. The buns are humongous and the filling to bun/shell ratio is awesome! The only thing I'd probably pass on next time would be the Taro Turnover - lots of filling but the taro was not fluffy like you can find at dim sum places. Skip here and have it at dim sum to save yourself the heartbreak.
Awesome filling to skin ratio!
Will probably return and try their other offerings, such as spring rolls, prawn turnovers and those delicious looking steamed meat buns. Piglet Recommended!
Pros:
Delicious offerings
Diverse selection of pastries, buns and dim sum items
Super-sized portions
Fast efficient service
Cons:
Pretty much take out only - 2 small tables does not a restaurant make
Cash only
BYOB - bring your own bag
