Sunway Restaurant - Richmond, BC

It's 6:30 pm, the piglets just worked some overtime, it's too late to cook and starvation is settling in! Where to eat? Handy dandy Blackberry says there's a place just two minutes away and it's got a 92% rating on Urbanspoon - let's go!

First impressions? It's an empty restaurant during the prime dinner hour, what have we done??? However, as soon as we sit down and get our menus, every table slowly gets filled up and there's a small line up for take out. Excellent... Love these family owned and run places!

I'm browsing through the menu and I see this:

What the heck is a Dead Man's Coffin??? We have to order it!

It's a deep-fried half loaf of Chinese white bread (sweeter than the standard Wonderbread), hollowed out, filled with cream-based seafood soup and then served piping hot. Verdict? Mr. Piglet loves it! He can't get enough of the stuff! He destroys both the bread bowl and soup within minutes. I, on the other hand, think the soup is a bit sweet for my liking but to each their own. Methinks the Dead Man's Coffin is named for its astronomical calories - deep fried white bread + cream seafood soup = artery waiting to burst. Either way, Mr. Piglet gives it a thumbs up.

Popcorn Chicken - it is THE BEST Taiwanese fried chicken I've ever had. Hands down. There was a plate of these bad boys on every single table, I kid you not, that's how good they are. My advice? Take a bite of the chicken with a little bit of that deep fried basil and thank me for it later.

Sunway Beef Noodle Soup - it's very much different from the other beef noodle soups I've had before. Rather than a deep beef taste, there's a light sour undertone from the preserved vegetables in the soup. This dish is less fatty than what's served at other places but the beef is very veiny so to solve this problem, Mr. Piglet ate the beef while I ate the noodles, veggies and soup.

Taiwanese BBQ Pork on Rice - LOVE LOVE LOVE the mixture of peanuts, preserved veggies, BBQ pork, rice and sweet garlic soy-based sauce. The BBQ pork was a little bit on the fatty side for me but Mr. Piglet didn't mind.

Peach Green Tea and Lychee Red Tea - both good but unnecessary as complimentary water and tea are served.

Our bill: Less than $40 and we were filled to the brim with leftovers for 2 lunches the next day. Heyoh!!!
