Mr. and I wander the Public Market and as we walk out, there's a donut joint that catches my eye. They have fritters, cinnamon buns and muffins the size of my head!!! Lee's Donuts has been a part of the Granville Island Public Market for over 27 years and they boast to use the freshest ingredients, whole eggs and real jam. Alas, they are sold out of the mango filled... *tear* but they have some other original flavors. Hm, just how good are these donuts?
Assorted Donuts - $7.25 (half dozen)
I don't know how good they are yet but they sure look good! They have some real original flavors so we decide on half a dozen to just tickle our taste buds. The honeydew was the most disappointing of the bunch - the honeydew is so faint, I'm not entirely sure it was even there. The power of suggestion from its name might have just made me imagine that this glazed donut had honeydew flavor.
Bavarian Chocolate Cream
This is the Piglets' favorite of the bunch - it's a nicely fried donut, covered in sugar and filled with chocolate pudding! What's there not to like??? I really just wish there was more filling - in fact, the few filled donuts we did get were all very tasty but they need to fill more than just 1/4th of the donut! WE WANT MORE TASTY FILLING!
German Chocolate
A close second, this one is just looks like a chocolate donut but it's so much more than that! You can taste the dark baking chocolate used and it's much more distinctive than your run of the mill Timmy's stuff. The coconut topping also adds a nice dimension to the rich chocolate flavor.
Apple-filled
Last but not least, Mr. Piglet and I think this tasty morsel ties for a second place finish. The outside is perfectly fried and a bit crispy, the inside is nice and fluffy and the filling reminds Mr. Piglet of apple pie. It's little things in life that make us happy and this donut is one of those little things. I just wish there was more filling... a little bit more and this would be pure PERFECTION.There's a reason why this little donut shop has endured through the years - tasty and original offerings at affordable prices without the pompous fanfare. Would the Hungry Piglets come back? DUH! They're donuts, of course we'll be back! And you folks should try this little gem out for yourselves as well - grab a few donuts, find a street performance and have yourself a wonderful Granville Island afternoon! Bon appetite!
