The One - Burnaby, BC

They have giant bubble teas! - Ms. Porker. That's all I needed to know. And the Piglet sisters and Teddies are off to The One!
Located on busy Kingsway and a spot formerly occupied by Tip Top Tailors is a Taiwanese joint called The One. It's a nice hip place with an eclectic mix of music (Taiwanese, Ying Yang Twins, Savage Garden...  they must have the radio set on random) and mostly younger crowd but there are are families and older couples present as well.  It has the same owners as Lao Shan Dong Homemade Noodle House but the noodles aren't the primary focus here, it's the various Taiwanese cafe fare that The One is known for and this is what we came for...

BAM!
Passionfruit Slush - $5.50

AND AGAIN!
Honeydew Slush - $5.50
Do you see the size of these things???!??  It's basically a 3 cup slush served in one order and it stands so tall, the server actaully has to take the top off for us.  Although it's just a slush BBT, it's done quite well here at The One.  The ice is blended so well so there are no chunks of ice and the slush is super smooth.  I like it!  Ms. Porker and I couldn't decide on a flavor to split so we got our own.  It's a good thing both of these drinks were too sweet or else we'd have developed diabetes on the spot.

Deep Fried Chicken Knee - $6.99
I can't believe this is an appy - the portion is pretty darn big.  These are like the deep fried chicken nuggets but with a bit of that crunchy cartilage in there.  Everyone at the table liked it but we all agree that it is nothing revolutionary.  I do wish that the basil was separated into individual leaves so you could eat it with the chicken without having to struggle with breaking it apart.  (I know I'm knitpicking!)  Oh and be careful of sharp bone bits - I was the lucky one to have the last piece and of course that last piece had shards of knee bone in it.

Vegetable Fried Noodle - $10.50
It's like they're serving food in sinks! - Mr. Teddy.  The giant portion sizes continues on to the entree dishes.  The noodles are tender and there are lots of veggies mixed within.  The malay-based sauce is generally quite overpowering but here it is just enough to flavor the vegetables without masking them.  The whole table enjoyed this dish and I, Ms. Piglet, really liked it despite it being meatless.  What is the world coming to???!!??

Fish Cake Fried Rice - $9.99
Huge portions part cinq!  The least successful of all the dishes as this one lacked any robust flavors, which is especially tragic when consumed with BB tea as it leaves this dish with no flavor at all.  The fish cake had the nice chewy texture with a tougher shell but the fish taste was so subtle it was hard to detect.  Both Teddies and Piglets wouldn't order this one again, not because it was terrible but there's so many other better dishes on the menu to choose from.

Deep Fried Chicken Nuggets Fried Rice - $9.99
I realized afterwards that we all ordered a fried item...  Oh well.  The huge portions continue with this dish (I'm not complaining!) and there's lots of chicken and fried rice.  This was generally good and great flavoring but I've never seen the chicken mixed in with the rice before - usually it's served on the side - which made most of the crispy exterior of the chicken pieces a bit soggy.  So sad.

After our ginormous meals, there was just no room left for dessert.  Physically, there was no way more food could fit in my stomach but I was thisclose to ordering a shaved ice dessert as the one on the table next us was so impressive.  Alas, next time and there will be a next time as Mr. Piglet (who couldn't make it due to prior commitments) was quite jealous of our eats.  Big portions, pretty good food, impressive BBTs and I still want to try their beef noodle and desserts so the Piglets will definitely make a trip back!  Bon appetite!
