Ok, this donut place has a giant rocket - we have to stop in and check it out!
We step in and we're transported onto the set of the original Star Trek? It's a mix of sci-fi, movie memorabilia and donuterie. Tables and chairs in the entrance as well as a seating area with kitschy decor and movie posters on the side. Rocket is locally owned and all of their bakery wares are handmade - that includes their beloved donuts! It's a lazy afternoon and although there isn't much of a lineup, there is a steady stream of customers coming in for a donut or two. After much contemplation, Mr Piglet and I choose a few fried delights and dig in...
Coconut Cake - $1.29
One of their smaller offerings (approximately half the size of a regular donut here) but it's got some good flavor for a plainish donut. There's a nice dousing of toasted coconut on top that's super tasty and it sits on a thick chocolate icing. This reminds me of a Mounds bar but much better. The donut itself has a nice traditional cake flavor and combined with the top is pretty tasty. Not bad for a tiny donut.
Chai Apple Pie - $1.69
The Rocket Donut's flavor of the month and the Hungry Piglets' favorite of the bunch! A slightly denser donut topped with a crunchy sugary streusel and white icing and filled with diced apples in cinnamon. I just wish there was more filling!! The chai taste was a bit too faint but overall, this donut reminded me of an apple crumble and both Mr. and I enjoyed it.
We'd first tried this beautiful abomination in Portland at Voodoo so we were quite excited to try Rocket's version. Verdict? This thing is packed with maple flavor, so much so that I couldn't even really taste the bacon. The bacon took a back set to the maple as it was wasn't salty enough to balance out the sweet. Bacon should never be second fiddle!! Mr. Piglet loves maple so he enjoyed this one but I preferred Portland's version more for the balance of salt to sweet.
Bavarian Bismarck - $1.69
It's basically a bavarian cream with a different name. I'm not a fan of custard so I took a bite and that was enough for me but Mr. Piglet really likes this one. His only qualm is that sure, it looks like there's lots of custard but you have to eat through a lot of dough as well. He demands more custard and less dough! There was also a lemon version of this with a glaze rather than chocolate and I'd come back to try that for sure.
Blueberry Fritter - $1.99
Look at that monstrosity! Let's measure it...
It's almost 6 inches of donut! Mama Piglet loves fritters so she'll definitely love this. It's a denser donut (all of these donuts were on the denser side) with a nice sweet glaze but the only problem is there isn't much blueberries or blueberry taste. I had to take several bites before finding any hint of blueberry. I think the apple fritter would've been a better choice and it's even bigger! C'est la vie...

All in all, Rocket Donuts was ok - they had some big honking donuts for a moderate price and the service was friendly and efficient. I just wish their donuts were a bit fluffier/lighter, had more filling to donut ratio and they had more original flavors available. But if Mr. Piglet and I ever find ourselves in Downtown Bellingham (it exists!) again, we'd definitely pop by for a coffee and donut (you're mine Lemon Bismarck!). Bon appetite!
Pros:
Pros:
- Free parking
- Free wifi
- Big donuts
- Vegan and Gluten free options available
Cons:
- On the pricier side for donuts
