Summer Night Market (Part 2) - Richmond, BC

And the food parade continues...  Good thing I'm here with the Teddy family or else I would've never been able to try everything!  After several savory items, we decided to move on to the dessert round.

TW Traditional Snacks
This stand has been here year after year and there's a reason why - their wheel cakes are awesome and although there is a wait, their numbering system is pretty organized and you can stand to the side and watch them work or try another one of their specialties.
Candied Fruits - $3
I don't know why they call it fruits when it's usually only strawberries they serve...  Anywhoo, it's whole strawberries covered in a honey sugar concoction.  I personally think unfettered fruit is good enough but this is not bad, especially if you grew up in Taiwan on these things - it's definitely a childhood connection to have one of these.

Wheel Cakes - $1 each
They have red bean, custard, peanut and nutella up for grabs.  This Piglet can't decide so I went with all 4 flavors to Mrs. Teddy's surprise.  I know I've eaten a lot already but I must try them all!!  Ok, so I've tried them before but for the sake of this blog, I will sacrifice a little more stomach space just you readers!  :)
Red Bean
Served up warm and is very sweet, maybe a bit odd for the non-Asian palate but worth the try - think of warm paste but in a good way.  That's not a good way to describe it.  Ok, think of warm beans smashed up inside a soft chewy cake.  You'll just have to try it to see what I mean.
Custard
It's custard, like the kind in the store bought cakes from Safeway or inside those bavarian cream donuts (the picture here doesn't do it justice since it was taken well after they had cooled down - it's normally much creamier and moist).  I'm not a fan of custard but for those who are, like Mr. Piglet, you'll definitely enjoy these.

Peanut
Filled with crunchy warm ooey peanut butter...  I know it's the processed Kraft peanut butter they use but it's still really good.  If you're a peanut butter lover, this is dessert for you.
Nutella
The grand kahuna of the bunch, just straight up Nutella from the jar into this cake.  It's warm gooey chocolate and hazelnut in a cake - what more could you ask for??

Just a little more space left and I know exactly where to go...
What started out as one small stand has now blossomed out into 4 consecutive stands, no doubt standing on the success of their dessert drinks.  I'm not interested in the first 3 stands - it's the 4th dessert stand that I come to every year, several times during the summer.
Vietnamese Dessert
So many people that I can't get a clear shot of the stand without some heads in the way...  they better not get in my way when I order though or there will be violence.
It's got white beans, red beans, bean paste, green jelly, assorted jelly and some other stuff I don't even know about layered into a cup with coconut milk and topped with ice.
6 Coloured Dessert (#1) - $5
There's crunchy (from I don't know what), there's sweet, there's beans and ice...  so many textures, flavors and temperatures going on.  The Teddys and I agree that this is the best version of this multi-colored dessert item we've had thus far, even in a lot of restaurants.  Super refreshing, lots of fillings and if you like coconut, this is the dessert for you.  Do me a favor, come see this lovely lady and order yourself the #1 - 6 colored jelly dessert.  It's definitely a dessert worth saving room for.

Pros:
  • Free parking available
  • Pay parking right at the market available for $5 a car
  • Great place to hang out, try some odd and wonderful food and get your stationary at the same time!
  • Makes for a great walking place after dinner to just walk or grab some dessert
  • Closes at 1 am on Fridays and Saturdays and at 12 on Sundays
  • Variety of tasty tasty (yes, that's twice on purpose) food available!
Cons:
  • Cash only!  Bring it or else face a treacherous line up at the ATM machine
  • Free parking - get here early or super late because any time between that will mean a trek from the Himalayas
  • Very busy and you will get bumped in the food aisles so be careful and protect your food!
