Tacofino Blue - Vancouver, BC

It's a beautiful Vancouver day, a rare sunshine break in May from the rain so this Piglet knew advantage had to be taken of this day. There was a few hours to spare before a Piglet household get together and while fiddling around with our Twitter account, I find out that a certain taco truck normally open only on the weekdays in downtown Vancouver would be open this weekend! Yay! Tacos for me!

So I first found out about Tacofino on the show Eat St. It started out in Tofino, feeding the locals and surfers but now it's made it's way onto the Mainland as one of few lucky food trucks in downtown Vancouver. It's open on this particular Saturday for Youth Week at the skate park (some of those pint-sized cando some amazing things on a skateboard!) so I ventured over for a lil taste of what this taco truck had to offer. According to the show, people loved their fish tacos so fish tacos it is!

Fish Taco - $4.50
Tempura battered ling cod with chipotle mayo, shredded cabbage and salsa fresca on a warm 6" flour tortilla.
Oh man the toppings are pretty darn fresh! The fish is fried perfectly golden brown and even though there was lots of sauce and toppings, it remains crunchy to the very last bite. The fish isn't fishy tasting at all and the shredded cabbage and salsa fresca is refreshing and cool. Before I know it,the taco is finished and I'm sad. :(. Good thing I got a second one!

Tuna Ta-Taco - $6.50
Seared sesame tuna, cabbage, wasabi mayo, mango salsa on a flour tortilla
Not on the regular menu, this was posted in by the ordering window and it had me at the word "tuna". This thing was a work of art - it looks great and combines a wide range of tastes and textures. The seaweed is crunchy and gives it an earthy taste while the toasted sesame seeds give it that nutty scent and taste. The wasabi dressing is not spicy at all but complements the fish really well, especially when you give it that squeeze of lime and mango salsa so there's that that tartness as well. The fish is perfectly cooked, sashimi in the middle and cooked perfectly seared on the outside. Wish I got two of these... Or ten. Yeah, ten would do. Ten orders next time.

Chocolate Diablo Cookie - $2.50
Fudgy chocolate cookie with ginger and chili, milk chocolate chunks and salty sprinkles
Dessert? Yes please! Came in a nice paper bag so I didn't know what to expect... I take it out and there's melted milk chocolate everywhere. Oh man, this is gonna be good. Soft rich dark chocolate chip cookie with giant globs of melted milk chocolate on top. I'm eating it and slipping into chocolate bliss when something starts to happen... A bit of heat is building on the tip of my tongue and slowly fills the entire palate. There's chili in this thing and for once, you can actually taste it. The chili lingers for a while but isn't too spicy and that with the ginger makes this cookie just a bit warm and I LOVE IT.  Then the salt kicks in for that crunchy bite and to off-set the sweet...  Oh how can a taco truck make such an awesome cookie????  Update: I have saved half of the cookie for the next day and it was still soft!  AWESOME.  Note to self: must get 10 of these next time as well.

Awesome fish tacos. Chocolate chili cookie. Yeah, I'll be back and bringing friends with me. Yum.

My view as I ate...  Ahhhh, the perfect lunch on a beautiful day...

  1. Burritos are amazing, totally worth the $10, really filling too! I've only had them in Tofino, but I'm glad to hear I can find it in Vancouver too. I wanted the Tuna Taco last time but they ran out, so I guess I'll have to do it next time, it looks amazing.
