Dai Jang Kum - Richmond, BC

Another day in the life of a Piglet...  work out, eat, work out and eat some more.  Monkey is planning his mammoth BBQ (that I can't attend due to work - BOO) so we meet up in-between the butcher shop and produce shopping to grab a bite together.  Not in the noodle mood, not really up for Taiwanese food, HK cafes are out of the question, just had sushi yesterday...  what else is left???  Light bulb!  Another Monkey suggestion coming up!
Dai Jang Kum is located on Bridgeport just a few blocks up from my gym so it's perfect.  What's also perfect is that you grill your own food - you smell like Korean BBQ afterwards but at least you can't smell me after a workout!  Perfect.  Oh, and by the way, it's pronounced "Coooom" not the other way.

Nice big parking lot and there's plenty of seats.  Authentically Korean owned and operated, as most of these places are, and there are Koreans eating here so it must be good.  I can't wait!  A quick glance at the menu and within 2 seconds, we know what we want - I don't think we've ever decided so fast.  I'm starving.  Bring on the food!

Combo 2 with Assorted Meats and Seafood for 2 - $37.95

A whole whackload of different meats that you grill yourself - thinly sliced beef, short ribs, pork and pieces of chicken along with some mussels, squid and shrimp...  Everything is very lightly marinated in soy, garlic and sugar but it's the dipping sauce of the same ingredients that really takes the cake.  Grill, grill, dip, dip...  nothing better than that.  Oh man, that's a lot of meat and seafood but that's not it.  Oh no my friends.  There's those wonderful side dishes that Korean meals come with.  Let's rock.

DJK serves a thinly sliced radish marinated in wasabi that's really interesting and good - crunchy, sweet, sour and there's a hint of wasabi kick.

DJK also has a fish cake dish that along with a piece of green onion that is also quite good.  Kimchi is spicy, salty, cool and crunchy as ever.

White rice and a plain salad on the side with a carrot sweet but sour vinaigrette...

The tried and true marinated potatoes - I love them dearly and will always get a refill of these.  The bean sprouts were good too - lightly marinated in what I think is a sesame oil based sauce.

Miso soup...  kind of a weird addition to our meal and kind of unncessary.

LOVE THE SIDE DISHES!  Oh how I wish I had a second or third stomach for more dishes because there was an oxtail soup that looked absolutely divine and the seafood pancake...  *drool*  I just love the idea of grilling your own food - the interaction and discussion over it is superb.  You need the grill changed?  Ring the bell.  You need more side dishes?  You ring the bell.  Whenever you need anything, just ring the bell and they'll be there for you.  The servers and owners aren't the friendliest of people but they get what you need and that's really all I ask for in the end.  You end up smelling like BBQ but it's worth it in the end for a nice piece of grilled short rib.  Bon appetite!

Pros:
  • Wide array of meats and seafood for grilling and other Korean comfort dishes
  • Complimentary side dishes with 1 free refill for each with your meal
  • Cash, credit and debit accepted
  • Free parking in a nice wide lot with large parking spaces - rare in Richmond
  • Ability to grill your own food!  Yay!
Cons:
  • Unfriendly but efficient service
  • Grill was defective - it kept going out in the middle of grilling
