Nero Belgian Waffle Bar - Vancouver, BC

So Mr. Piglet forgot to take me out for my birthday.  He figured that a family dinner was enough.  I am going to make him pay dearly for this mistake.  So I put him to the test - make a reservation or else...  We ended up at a nice Belgian place for dinner but I wanted something sweet too.  A quick Twitter tweet revealed that this place, Nero Belgian Waffle Bar, was open until 11 on a weekday.  I know!  On a weekday!  Off we go!
It's a small place at the end of Robson St and the smell of waffle hangs in the air.  Right away we're greeted by a bearded man making fresh waffles at the door and a very pregnant cashier behind the counter.  They make their waffles fresh and in small batches!  LOVE!  I want something with berries and Mr. Piglet wants something with ice cream so we combine our wishes and wait for what the cashier/owner/host/server had made up for us...

Razz - $7.50 (extra $2 for vanilla ice cream)
Fresh raspberries and 60% dark chocolate on a liege waffle
The liege waffle was crunchy on the outside and super soft and a bit chewy on the inside.  Even though it was topped with ice cream, the waffle still maintained its crunchiness.  SO GOOD!  The raspberries were fresh and sweet (probably not local since the season is over but it still tasted excellent).  We loved that the chocolate on top was hardened whereas the chocolate on the plate was gooey - it just made everything go together really well.  The ice cream was plain vanilla ice cream out of a bucket but it matched really well with all of the topping ingredients.  1 raspberry with chocolate + 1 piece of waffle + dip in soft chocolate + dip in powdered sugar + spoonful of vanilla ice cream = the perfect dessert bite.  As you can see, it stood no chance.
This was the highlight of our date night.  If you're looking for a nice dessert place to wind down, either during the week or weekend, Nero Belgian Waffle Bar is the place to go.  No pretentious attitude - just friendly purveyors, great waffles and a cozy atmosphere.  A real gem and we'll be back and you should come by as well.  Bon appetite!
Oinks:
  • Open late on weekdays and weekends (late meaning until 11 which is great in a city where everything closes at 9 or earlier)
  • Excellent waffles and desserts
  • Really friendly service and cozy atmosphere
  • Moderate prices
Doinks:
  • Small place - only a few tables and a bit cramped as well
  • Liege waffles only made in batches so they sell out constantly - so go soon and go often!
