House of Tofu Soup - Richmond, BC

Guess who's birthday it is?  Mine!  Yay!  I'm turning 25 again!  This year has been super low key since I've been working like a maniac so I left it up to Mrs. Teddy to plan a low key dinner.  She gave me a few options but I chose this place since Godzilla said it was amazing.  Godzilla and I don't see eye to eye on our restaurant picks so I had my reservations about going. We'll see how it goes...
It's pretty bare in here...  Usually Korean places are a bit more intimate and they have some Asian decor flare but this place looks more like a furniture store than a restaurant save for the tables in the place.  Hm, pretty busy for a Thursday night.  I love it when we have these family dinners because then we get to try a little bit of everything.  We end up ordering almost the whole menu and wait for our dishes...

Banchan
Some complimentary dishes come our way - some kimchi (of course), mashed potatoes (kinda weird for it to show up and also had a odd sweet flavour I didn't like but the rest of the table didn't mind), pumpkin soup (on the sweeter side and not bad), pickled daikon radish (it leaves a weird aftertaste) and marinated seaweed (my favourite). 



Mandeukee - $5.99
One of my favorite dishes but I can't really put my finger on why.  It's basically thick rice noodle tubes covered in an electric red sauce but then there's some dumplings underneath.  The sauce is a nice balance of sweet, salty and spicy and I generally don't like that chewy soft texture but this tasted great with the sauce.  The dumplings were also tasty but the skin had absorbed a lot of sauce, which made it taste great, but also made them a bit on the chewy/soft side. 


Fried Dumplings - $4.99
Who doesn't like a fried dumpling?  These ones are also good but don't really have any meat in them - more cabbage than anything.  I think I would prefer the gyoza from a Japanese place or the potstickers from a Chinese place because I think the skins are not as chewy and I just think the filling tastes better (MEAT = BETTER).


Japchae - $14.99
A nice portion size and the sauce mixed with the noodles is sweet but savoury.  The texture is a lot softer than you think and a bit sticky so you might not be used to it but if you like those softer textures, it's really tasty.  A crowd pleaser for sure at our table.


Stone Bibimbop - $10.99
This was mostly disappointing for our table for several reasons.  Usually when we order this dish, the server will stir it up for us (or offer to at least) but here, they plop on your table and leave.  It would have been fine if the stone was hot but it wasn't.  So trying to make that nice crust that was the point of ordering the stone version rather than the regular version was moot.  And this dish comes with no sauces, nothing.  Just rice with vegetables and you add the sauces yourself.  What is the point of eating out if you have to flavour it yourself anyways???  So we had cold, flavourless rice and vegetables.  *sigh*  Next!


Seafood Pancake - $14.99
Came out sizzling hot and was instantly a table pleaser.  Lots of seafood and other vegetables and was a tad thicker than other seafood pancakes that I've had.  A dip in the brown sauce and it was awesome.


Chicken Bulgoghi - $14.99
Chicken is tender but again, there is no flavouring to this dish and you have to add it yourself.  The portion size is also on the small side but I suspect because we got it in a combo with the soup, the size was reduced.


Beef Bulgoghi - $14.99
See above but insert "beef" to where "chicken" was and still not a fan of having to add your own sauce.


Bibim Noodle - $8.99
This one was completely out of left field and I'm still wondering if I liked it.  We were all expecting this steaming hot bowl of kimchi flavoured noodles in a luxurious red sauce but what we got was a bowl of cold noodles in a metal bowl.  It was in a red spicy sauce but the spice was muted because of the cold temperature.  I think I didn't mind it,  the Teddy's didn't mind it, Mr. Piglet didn't care for it and Qdog hated it (and he's the one who ordered it!).  I think this would be a wicked dish on a hot day but since it was a bitterly cold fall evening, the effect of this dish was lost.


Seafood Tofu Soup (came with beef bulgoghi)
It comes out bubbling hot from the kitchen!  Awesome.  This bowl came with shrimp, squid and other seafood.  For a small bowl, there's actually quite a bit of seafood in it so the broth itself has a bit of a seafood undertone.  I like that you can choose the level of spice to suit your palate.


Dumpling Soup (came with chicken bulgoghi)
See comments and picture above except remove the seafood part.  The dumplings were good and for a small bowl, there were quite a few pieces inside.  However, I thought the broth wasn't as tasty since it was missing that extra seafood component.  Of the two, this one was the weaker soup.

I love going out with the family because you can try a larger variety of dishes but in saying that, it sucks when some of the dishes are much better than others.  The good thing about House of Tofu Soup is that most dishes ranged from good to very good.  Just hope that the stone bowl for your bibimbop is 30 degrees hotter than ours and you should be ok.  Bon appetite!
