Zephyr Tea House Cafe - Richmond, BC

Why are we here?  I've driven by a million times before but have never gone in and we actually visited their sister restaurant right next door a few months back.  So why are we here?  Well, why not?  Mr. Piglet and I just needed a fast place to go to before his hockey game and I just wanted to avoid traffic.  Why in our city does a little bit of rain mean an extra 45 minutes of commuting?  Do we not see rain 10 months out of the year??  Ok, stopping the rant.  In we go!
Nice looking place with great booth seats.  There's bubble tea served but I'm just not feeling it although I've heard that the portions are pretty decent.  Mr. Piglet and I take a seat, peruse through the menu, make our picks and wait...
Spicy Cucumbers - $5.00
I love that these are broken down pieces of cucumber instead of the generic chopped that we've been getting lately so that's a nice note to start on.  This one is more vinegar-based marinated than a saucy concoction which is a nice change.  There's plenty of salty, sweet, tart, garlicky and spicy notes and the cucumbers themselves are super crunchy.  The Mr. and I enjoyed this dish and would order it again.

House Special Beef Noodle - $7.95
The noodles are cooked to a nice al dente texture and there's a nice helping of veggies.  The broth was thinner and there wasn't as much beef flavour as we've had at other beef noodle places.  It's not bad, but it's not great either.  We've had better beef noodles at other Taiwanese places.  The price point is also not bad.  It comes with a side of marinated seaweed and marinated lotus root - the seaweed has some nice subtle flavours whereas the lotus is just bursting with ginger - I can drink super strong ginger ale but eating ginger is a whole other thing, maybe a bit too strong.

Popcorn Chicken on Rice - $7.95
When it arrives at our table, I'm already pretty pleased because I spy pieces of deep fried basil as well.  Why don't more places do this?  Anyhoo, the chicken is piping hot, moist on the inside and super crunchy salty peppery goodness on the outside.  Not the best Taiwanese deep fried chicken but still pretty good.  Mr. Piglet likes it too because his chopsticks keep darting over at my dish - stay away from my chicken!!  My dish comes with an extra side - marinated cold tofu which is just ok, the flavours are kind of muted and the tofu is a bit more firm than I would like but the good thing is that this is just a side.  This meal is all about the chicken.

How to sum up this meal?  It was ok.  That's all I can think of.  Go if you want to, don't go if you don't want to, you won't be missing out on anything spectacular.  If you're looking for a place for some ok Taiwanese food, then drop on by but is it special?  Meh.  Yeah, that's a good way to sum up this experience.  It was just a shrug of the shoulders - nothing awful or bad happened but nothing special either.  It was just ok.  Bon appetite?
