Osaka Teppanyaki - Vancouver, BC

Happy Birthday Mr Bluebird!  After a night of good music (yay 80s and 90s hits!), a fantastic slideshow, surprisingly tasty catered food and great friends, Mrs Bluebird has invited a ton of people out for dinner a few days afterwards.  So nice of them, especially when all I did was hang some paper lanterns for the party...  oh well.  I'll just ride on the backs of the hard work the Teddys and Mr Piglet did for the party!

We're invited to Osaka Teppanyaki - I don't know much about this place but I've been here at least twice before.  In typical teppanyaki fashion, there's a chef that cooks on a flat top in front you whilst performing various tricks and stunts with sharp knives, hot oil and lots of flame-age - the types of tricks that would end with many appendages being severed or being seriously maimed if attempted by you or I.  After commandeering 3 tables (there's a lot of people here!), the chefs get ready for the show and my tummy gets ready for the chowing!

Miso Soup
This is not your regular miso soup - there's mushrooms and it tastes more herbal than any other soup I've ever had.  Mixed reviews for this soup from the table.  I personally really like the addition of the fried shallots but I wish it weren't so watery and a bit more savoury in flavour.

Salad
It's a salad.  It tastes like what it looks like.

Fried Rice - $6.95
The fried rice tastes pretty good - a lot of garlic flavour which makes me suspect that the seasoning the chef constantly sprinkles on everything may be garlic salt or msg or a combination of the two.  I'm super thirsty after eating this so I'm thinking it's the combo.  This is a bit more basic though, not a lot of vegetables or meat, mostly rice and just egg but much better than the plain white rice.

Teppan Shrimps - $28.95
A pretty good portion size of shrimps and it was nice to see it cooked right in front of us but it's too bad the shrimps were a tad overcooked.  It was probably on the grill just a few minutes too much - we like the bit of char on the outside but the shrimp is also dry and chewy on the inside.  It was also the first component to be cooked so by the time all of the proteins were cooked and the chef moved on to the various vegetables, we were already finished eating the shrimps.  So Mr ended up eating just veggies with rice later on.  *sigh*

Steak and Chicken Combo - $27.95
The steak tastes great, especially with a dunk into that second miso-based sauce.  Yum!  I like that they're bite-sized pieces, which is probably why they're a little bit overdone, but I just like that nice little bite of food with a bit more crust than normal.  Out of everything we've had tonight, this is my favourite.  *sigh*  Why couldn't I have steak bites every night?  Oh wait, I'd be broke and fat.  The teriyaki chicken is on the salty side, maybe too much garlic salt/msg, but it's super tender and again, love the bite-sized servings.  This one definitely has to be eaten mixed with the veggies and plain white rice.

I really enjoy the fact that there's a performance to your meal but I've been here a few times now and everytime I've come here, I've had chef envy.  It seems as though the show/tricks/performance of chefs at other tables is much better than the chef at our table.  It's not cheap but with a coupon from that Entertainment Book so many people are fond of, it's not that bad considering what you'd be paying at other high end teppanyaki places.  The bottom line is this: the food is decent but you're definitely paying for the show so take it as you want to!

Oinks:
  • Nice show to go with your meal
  • Cheaper than other teppanyaki places - there are coupons if you can find them!
  • Friendly service
  • Reservations accepted
Doinks:
  • On the pricier side
  • Courses come out one at a time which makes eating a complete comprehensive meal difficult - i.e. shrimp is cooked and you eat it all before your veggies are served so you end up eating white rice with veggies
  • End up smelling like BBQ
  • Extra charge for sharing meals
  • Tight squeeze for big groups
