Pho Ten - Richmond, BC

Worked an 11 hour shift today.  No cooking will be happening, that's for sure.  Take me to food Mr. Piglet!  But where?  Since we've started blogging, we've eaten at a lot of places in Richmond.  I know we haven't even scratched the surface but it always seems we end up suggesting/thinking of the same restaurants. How are we going to fix that?  Urbanspoon App to the rescue!  Shake function and here's where we end up!

I have no idea what this place is even about except that a coworker of mine may have suggested it to me but I can't remember when or who even did so.  We park and I'm immediately surprised at how clean, organized and modern this place looks.  The ambiance is nice, but what about the food?  Let's see!!
Grilled Prawn on Sugar Cane - $2.95
This is not prawns skewered on a sugar cane, rather prawn paste moulded around a stick of sugar cane. They say it was boiled and then lightly grilled but from the texture and taste, I'd say there were some deep-frying involved as well.  Either way, this is really tasty!  The texture is chewier than I expected - think traditional seafood-balls in hot pot - but no matter because there's plenty of prawn flavouring and with a dip in that sweet and sour fish sauce...  yum...  Needless to say this disappeared quickly.  Two more please!

Pho Tai Bo Vien - $6.75
Rare slice steak and beef balls pho
My go-to at any pho place...  you can't go wrong with this one at any pho place and Pho Ten is not bad.  A lighter broth without being too salty (a lot of places use WAY too much salt) and noodles cooked to a nice al dente.  My only gripe is that it's a small bowl, there isn't much meat (a few slices of steak and maybe 1.5 meatballs) and there was only a small serving of sprouts and basil.  Even the patrons beside remarked to us that the smalls were much smaller here than at other Vietnamese places.  Glad we weren't the only ones who noticed...

Com Tam Ga Cha Gio - $8.50
Grilled lemongrass chicken and deep fried spring roll on steamed broken rice (with soup)
Chicken was grilled really well, nice charring and a bit of crunch on some of the edges was a nice touch, and we were glad that it wasn't at all gristly or greasy. The spring roll was also really good - lots of filling but the roll itself was quite small and thin.  Mr loves his white rice - eat up Mr cuz it's all brown rice at home!

I'd say this were the most modern and clean looking Vietnamese place I've been to in a LONG time.  If you're not comfortable with the cuisine just yet, Pho Ten is the place to get you started.  Simple and true Vietnamese menu that will satisfy the traditionalists whilst putting the newbies to comfort.  A place for the old and new - bon appetite!

Oinks:
  • Delicious food
  • Modern decor with comfortable seating
  • Free ample parking
  • Credit card, debit card and cash accepted - a rarity in Richmond!
Doinks:
  • On the more expensive side for Vietnamese food (but still a cheaper option than many other places in Richmond!)
  • Smaller portion sizes - their small-sized pho is noticeably smaller than other places
