Phnom Penh - Vancouver, BC
I had heard from many other diners that this place was good but I could never fit the time to go in. The one attempt on a Sunday afternoon was a fail as the lineup went out the door and around the block. So it's Friday night and the piglets are thinking there's time to spare so we head down to the seedy neighbourhood of Chinatown and decide to wait it out once and for all. We get there at 7:30 and there's an hour wait! Thank goodness for Iphones and Ipads... The food must be good since there are throngs of people waiting and this is no sit-down-mull-around kind of joint. The verdict? It was worth every second of waiting.
Butter Beef - it's not what you think! Half cooked, half rare and full of F-L-A-V-O-R. There's crunchy bits of garlic and parsley on top and the meat sits in a soy-based "special" sauce. Dawlings, if you every get into this place, do yourself a favor and have the beef.
On every table you will see a plate of these wings and do you know why? Because, they're ^&$#@#%! awesome is why! These crunchy little morsels have a garlic concoction on top and come with a pepper lemon dipping sauce. There's also a hint of sweetness somewhere in there that I can't figure out. These wings move in mysterious ways.... The table beside us had two plates of these bad boys and then took another two servings to go! We piglets felt inept after that. :( Good thing there were wings at our table to help ease the pain. Again, do yourself a favor and have the chicken wings.
The noodles were ok, almost the exact same as pho but with less depth of flavor but check out the meatballs. They were the size of my fist!
My seafood crepe was good and my fellow piglet loved it but I think compared to the beef and chicken wings, this was lacking something...
A second trip to Phnom Penh may be in order as I think we missed a few of the must-haves such as the rice dish with beef and an egg, a dry noodle, ribs and squid. For the sake of my readers, I will endure the wait and eat here again for you! Phnom Penh part deux, here we come!!!
