Shang's Noodle House - New Westminster, BC

Shang's Noodle House - New Westminster, BC

So what's a pair of piglets to do if you're outside of Vancouver and Richmond and you crave a good ole Hk cafe meal? Nothing much other than drive out to Vancouver and Richmond from wherever godforsaken place you are currently at. That is until a piggy's sister said there was a place just across the Alex Fraser that served a pretty decent bowl of noodles. So the piggies set out to a casino?? Yup, it's attached to the Starlight Casino and is owned by the Kirin Restaurant group, a location of which is also conveniently located next door.

In the mood to try something new, Mr. Piglet decides on the BBQ Pork Spinach Ramen in Pork Broth Combo. It comes with a huge plate of BBQ pork on the side, two prawn dumplings and a lychee juice. The broth is subtle but with nice depth and the spinach ramen is different in a good way. MR. PIGLET LOVES THE BBQ PORK. That stuff should be a mandatory condiment at all restaurants. Ketchup, mustard, salt, pepper and BBQ Pork. The juice is liquid sugar and the prawn dumplings were good for a place that doesn't specialize in dim sum (I don't think I've ever met a prawn dumpling I haven't liked) but I think that might have to do with Kirin. Side note: Kirin does excellent dim sum. I admit it's a little pricier but damn it is quality stuff! And how much did this combo set us back? $9.50! That's it!!

I go for Shang's House Ramen with Prawn, Scallop, Chicken and BBQ Pork that comes with chilled pudding and passion fruit juice. At last! A HK cafe noodle that I don't have to go to Vancouver and Richmond for!! And it comes with giant pieces of every meat listed! Were there leftovers? Of course there was and I ate it proudly at work the next day. I like to think my coworkers were jealous of my lunch although I did see steak, other chicken chow mein that was pretty good, chorizo pasta.... I'm sure they were secretly jealous despite having steak... Whatever! Delicious for only $12.80.

A Malaysian-Style Ramen ordered on another trip.

My chilled pudding that turned out to be taro flavored goodness jello contraption! I'd order it separately the next time if I didn't get a combo.

I've saved the crown jewel of Shang's Noodle for last - I present to you.... THE DEEP FRIED SQUID WITH GARLIC!! I could eat 30 plates of these in one sitting. I think I might try to do that next time. Squid may very well become the next species to be endangered because of this dish. If you're ever stuck out in New West and have a hankering for nibble, come to Shang's for the deep fried squid and help me endanger these invertebrates!
