Savary Island Pie Company - West Vancouver, BC

After a morning of snowboarding, two piglets and a burro are starving and tired.  Sensing a moment of weakness, I quickly suggest the Savary Island Pie Company and drag Mr. Piglet and Burro out there before they even know what hit them.

It's a tiny place with limited seating but a whole lot of kitchen space showing. All of the specials are on the wall and I snag a seat while Burro and Mr. Piglet order food. It smells great in here and the number of baked goods on display are so tempting!

Tortiere with Lentil Herb Soup - $8.50
Traditionally French-Canadian, organic beef and pork pie made with shredded potatoes and onions and spiced with cloves, all spice and cinnamon
"It's SO good" - Burro. That's all I get from Burro as the food is inhaled. He later comments that the crust is amazing and the spicing of the meat was delicious. I manage to try the lentil soup and found it was thick and hearty and the herbs were an interesting blend (dill?) but somehow it works.

Chicken Pot Pie with Tossed Salad - $8.50
Made with free-range chicken, peas, carrots and onions in a lightly creamed base
Fresh organic spring mix, tomato, avocado, thinly sliced red onion, slivered almonds, grated pepperoncini, shaved grana padano cheese with homemade garlic dressing
The chicken was incredibly tender, the crust was crisp and also had a nice mix of seasonings atop. Even though it's cream based, it didn't feel heavy at all and the salad was a nice refreshing break from the pie. The salad itself was quite good for being just a salad - the grated cheese added a nice balance to the garlic dressing and no wilted leaves in sight. Overall, Mr. Piglet says it's the best Chicken Pot Pie he's ever had.

Grilled Chicken with Fresh Basil Sandwich - $12.25
Served on Italian bread with green onion pesto, aged white cheddar cheese, fresh tomato and organic marinated chicken
The bread is amazing! It's crispy and holds the moist insides very well without going soggy. The pesto plays off really well with the cheddar and although the chicken is grilled, it's still moist and plenty flavorful. My only gripe is that it's a tad greasy as the bread seems to have been grilled but overall, it's still in the top 5 of the best sandwiches I've ever had.  It was so good, Mr. Piglet now has the above photo as his screen saver - you you're fat when...  LOL.

Lemon Buttermilk Pie with Berries and a side of whipped cream - $4.95 + 0.75
On a whim I decide to order a slice of pie - this is a pie company so it should be good right? Damn straight it's good! It's better than good, it's absolutely fantastic! The filling is pudding-like and the tart and sweet are just perfectly balanced. The crust is flaky and light and with a dob of that whipped cream, I fall into pie heaven. It's so good Mr. Piglet almost finishes it in one fell swoop but not today buddy, over my dead body you're finishing it off! I quickly gobble up a nice share before it's gone.  Should've gotten one of these to go... Ahh, je regret. *tear*

Overall: The Savary Island Pie Company knows its pies and pie crust like no other. Best in Vancouver? We'd believe it. The Piglets definitely will be back if in the area - the food is amazing and that lemon buttermilk pie! Oh, I just KNOW I'm going to be dreaming about it tonight... Yum yum!
