Coconut Kenny's - Bellingham, WA

Every few weeks, Mr. Piglet and I take a trip down south to fill up on gas and groceries (almost par!) and everytime we go, we end up racing back home for a meal or eating a hot dog from a certain big box store. Well, I decided to put a stop to that and find out if there's any good food just across the border.

After much research, we end up here at Coconut Kenny's, just two minutes down the street from Trader Joe's. We walk in and there's a Hawaiian motif going on and a laid back vibe. A few tables are filled but by the time we're ready to order, all of the tables are full at 2:30 in the afternoon on a Sunday. That's a good sign.

It's supposed to be Hawaiian but there's no Hawaiian cuisine on the menu. There's sports memorabilia on the walls and sports on the tvs but it's not a sports bar. The Piglets are confused but it's too late to turn back. The menu is mostly pizzas and sandwiches and just a few appies, so we decide on two sandwiches and the only dessert they offer.

Da Hang 10 - on special for $5.55
Hawaiian-style meatballs marinated in marinara sauce (or honey BBQ if you like), topped with pineapple and green onions, served on famous Hawaiian bread under a layer of melted mozzarella cheese
"It's like a pizza on a bun!" - Mr. Piglet. And it really is! Lots of sauce, lots of cheese, lots of pineapple and lots of meatballs! A really filling sandwich and those meatballs were perfectly seasoned and very moist, perfect for this sandwich. The real gem of this sandwich though was the Hawaiian bread - soft and chewy on the inside but it has a nice crispy crust on the outside. Even though the contents are a delicious mess on the inside, this bread holds its own and never gets soggy. My only gripe is that the pineapple is clearly canned but I guess that's what you'd find on a Hawaiian pizza as well.

Da King Mahalo - on special for $5.55
Diced chicken breast, bacon, red onions, cilantro, smokey chipotle sauce baked between Hawaiian bread and a blend of cheeses
This was voted one of the top 5 sandwiches of Whatcom County so it must be good? Answer? Yup. Just like the sandwich above, this monstrosity is stuffed full of sauce and toppings (there is LOTS of bacon) - exactly like a pizza in sandwich form. There's also pieces of cilantro that is a nice refreshing break from the sweet BBQ sauce (but if you hate cilantro, you might wanna have that taken out). And that bread? Perfect. The sandwiches are so massive, the Piglets can only finish off half of each one and save the rest for dinner. I heart leftovers!

Cinnamon Balls - $4.49 for a half order (shown here)
You know how much I loved the bread in the sandwiches? Well, here they're made into golf ball sizes, rolled in cinnamon sugar, drizzled with chocolate and caramel and then served with vanilla ice cream. Crispy bread with a warm soft center and a cold bite of ice cream...  OMG. Sugar rush! A little bit sweet for me but Mr. Piglet can't get enough despite being stuffed to the brim already. And this massive plate is only a half order! Gripe? The vanilla ice cream is from a tub - not bad so it's not some no name brand but the real attraction here are those lil morsels of cinnamon and sugar.

Overall: The Piglets were pleasantly surprised and will be back. If you like pizza or sandwiches or wanna put the two together, Coconut Kenny's is worth the visit!  Mahalo!

Pros:

  • Friendly service
  • Many daily specials
  • Excellent bread
  • Great prices
  • Giant sandwiches
  • Large portion sizes
  • Everything is made to order - no sandwiches sitting under a heat lamp here

Cons:

  • Limited menu
  • Some ingredients come from the can or box - pineapple and ice cream in this case
  • Creepy guy sitting in the corner booth looking at internet dating sites on his laptop - avoid!
