Pajo's Fish and Chips (Steveston Wharf) - Richmond, BC

A little while back, I had a conversation with a cousin, Boar, in London discussing an article about a few restaurants in London.  In the midst of the conversation, he mentioned that the best fish and chips he'd ever had wasn't from London but this place in Steveston he had visited while in town.  What?  Really?  A place in Steveston that had better fish and chips than the city, neigh country, that spawned the fish and chips?  Well, Pajo's was that place and on this rare sunny day in June, this Piglet had to go and see what the hubbub was all about.  To the ocean!
After a 1.5 hour bike ride...  (I'm a food blogger that isn't blessed with the natural ability that some skinny &&^$^ have to eat what they want without consequence - I have to work hard to eat like I do!).  Anyways, what a beautiful day and incredibly perfect for some fish and chips right on the water.  Let's see what they have to offer...

Hm, so many options, so little stomach space!  It's self serve here so go to the window on the side (I know, deceiving right?  The front is not where you order but where you pick up) and then they call your number.  Now that I have the ordering down, it's time to eat!

Small Halibut Fish and Chips (1 1/2 pieces of fish) - $10.99
Crunchy on the outside and the fish is still moist and flaky on the inside.  Folks, it's worth it to shell out the few extra bucks to get the halibut over the cod because the taste and texture is just worth it.  A little greasy to the touch but that's kind of expected since it is deep-fried.  The fries are fries - I'm glad that they aren't like the McCain variety and taste a bit more homemade although I'm not sure if they are.  The tartar sauce is bit more mayo-y than others I've had and more creamy than tart but it matches the fish really well - it lets the fish shine rather than overpowering it.

Crab Cakes - $7.49
Packed full of seafood - some crab and fish in there I believe and not a lot of filler which is nice.  But compared to the fish and chips, this just doesn't shine as much.  A tad too greasy for something not deep-fried and it needs some sort of spicy or herb-y dip to really make it pop.  Good, but not as good as the f&c.
Overall, these were some pretty good fish and chips and I can understand why Boar really liked it.  I mean, come on - you're eating fish and chips on the water!  And it's not costing you an arm and a hoof!  It can't get any better than this! Bon appetite!
Pros:
  • Cash, credit and debit card accepted
  • Great location and views of the water
  • Relatively moderate pricing compared to what's around in that area and for that location
  • Not stingy with the condiments - tartar sauce galore!
Cons:
  • Busy busy busy on nice days and forget about it on the weekends
  • Self serve - some of the tables need to be wiped up more often
