La Boheme Creperie - Vancouver, BC

For the last few farmer's markets we've attended, this sweet like purple trailer has been there in the corner, beckoning us to give their crepes a try.  Unfortunately, due to our stomach space mismanagement, Mr and I haven't been able to give it a shot until we finally hit up the Kitsilano Farmer's Market on a particularly beautiful Sunday morning.  Finally!  There's a long line up and I end up baking in the sun for 30 minutes before I get to the front to order.  There's usually a line up for this place so it must be good, right?
I thought there was a lineup because they were making these crepes to order but not really - the crepes are pre-made and pre-folded on the side and when you order, they grab one and put it on the grill to warm up and fill it with whatever you ordered.  I feel....  I feel a bit cheated but I guess if it reduces wait times, it should be alright?  Meh.  Too late now as after giving myself a weird tank tan, it's finally my time to order.  Give me some savory crepes!

Ham and Cheese - $7.50
Bechemel, cheese, ham, tomato, parsley
These are buckwheat crepes, which are healthy and I appreciate that, but man oh man buckwheat is bland.  And when you have to wade through a lot of crepe to get to the filling, it's a little bit rough and boring at the same time.  I like that it's healthier than your regular flour-based version and it definitely holds the fillings better but it was also a bit dry (from the reheating I think) and mealy but with a bite of filling it's ok.  The filling itself was ok - lots of stringy gooey cheese that I love but there wasn't enough ham and there was too much tomato, so much tomato that for most of the crepe, that's all I tasted.  Poor ham...  how you suffered to be in the back seat to tomatoes...  I would have enjoyed it more had it been with cooked with some onions or greens instead.

Lebanese - $8.50
Red pepper spread, hummus, goat feta, pickled red cabbage, greens, tzatziki
I preferred this over the ham and cheese - like the hummus and both the pickled cabbage and tzatziki were quite refreshing but this crepe was missing something....  it needed a more savory meat element like lamb or even chicken.  After a few bites, Mr. Piglet lost interest and wished it had something spicy in it to counter the lack of protein and I'm actually inclined to agree with him.  We actually intended on getting a different crepe that had both ham, potatoes and greens but it had already sold out.  Everyone was probably thinking what we were thinking - these crepes need veggies and meat!  Some nice flavor profiles from the hummus but this crepe needed a protein.

I wanted to really like this beloved looking trailer but I just couldn't - the crepes just couldn't satisfy like the other foods we've tried at these farmer's markets.  I appreciate that they're toiling away in this hot trailer in 25C weather and their ingredients come from the markets but at the same time, the flavors were lost and the crepes themselves were not the moist fresh shells that I've had from other crepe places.  Perhaps one day we'll try a sweet crepe to see if it'll change our minds but as it stands, the Piglets will probably have to scrounge elsewhere at the markets for food.

Pros:
  • Local and fresh ingredients used
  • Healthy meal option
Cons:
  • Cash only
  • On the pricier side
  • Not really made to order - the ingredients are placed to order but the crepes are pre-made
