Flo Tea Room - Vancouver, BC

It's a boy's night out so I'm left to fend for myself.  Been eating a lot of food truck food lately so I've been craving something from Asia.  Monkey's just been back from what looks like a food binge in Taiwan and I want to see the photos so we decide to meet up for some eats.  Once he mentions his trip, I have a hankering for some Taiwanese eats.  I know it won't be the same as hometown eats but after I look at the photos, I know I'll want it.  Off to Flo!
It's located in the Marpole area on Granville Street and right beside one of my other favorite BB tea places.  Let's see how they fare against their next door neighbours!  The place is pretty empty but it is a Wednesday late evening so most people have work the next day...  Nice comfy seating in a booth.  Let's get some food!
Fall in Love - $4.95
Not sure what fruits are involved but this is pretty tasty!  I love the slushes here and I'd recommend trying the special drink series.  The only bad thing about this drink is that it's all powder and syrups.  Sorry, no real/fresh fruits are involved here!

Salty and Chili Chicken Knee Joint - $4.95
It's like the salty chili items you can get at dim sum.  The chicken is crunchy from the cartilage and the breading on the outside but it isn't seasoned enough, the flavors are good but it just needs more of it.

Crispy Salt and Pepper Chicken with Noodle Soup - $7.95
The chicken is super crunchy and the salt and pepper flavoring is there but, again, there just needs to be more!  It comes with a thai chili sweet and sour sauce but I found it didn't match well with the chicken and was quite unnecessary.  The noodle soup is VERY subtle in flavour but I like the addition of the baby bok choy and the noodles themselves are cooked al dente.  The chicken is supposed to be added to the noodles and I guess that would've pumped up the flavour of the soup but I didn't want my chicken to get mushy.

Honey Toast Box with Chocolate Drizzle - $7.50
Crispy bread pieces completely covered in sugar.  Yum...  You take a bit of the toast, scoop up some ice cream, get a bit of that drizzle...  so good.  I think there needs to be more chocolate drizzle but other that, this is a tasty toast box.  I think this dish would be invincible if it had matcha, black sesame, mango or taro flavored ice cream in it.  It'd be great if there was a rotational special of ice cream flavors or something like that instead of just vanilla.  I hope they read this post and take my idea into consideration...

The food at Flo isn't bad at all but the theme of this place should be MORE is MORE.  MORE salt, MORE pepper, MORE chocolate...  if they could punch up the seasonings just one notch, this could be in my regular rotation of places to go.  As of right now, if I want a break from my regular rotation, then I'd consider coming back.  If you're thinking of eating here, the bubble tea here is good and if you stick to the more flavorful dishes, you'll do alright.  Bon appetite!

Pros:
  • Free street parking
  • Wide menu
  • Generally tasty food
Cons:
  • Cash only
  • More flavoring needed!!
