Bayou on Bay - Bellingham, WA

"I'm sorry ma'am but there's nothing we can do" - Macy's customer service
Ok, so I ordered this cup set from Macy's a few months back but they were backordered and I forgot about it.  One day, a few months later and out of the blue, they delivered it and then I got a bill for it a few weeks later that had a due date that was only 4 days later.  WTH??  I can't pay a bill that I don't receive and I already made a trip to the US of A just last week.  Now I have to make another trip to pay a bill of $18.  So frustrating!!!  Oh well, we'll try to make the best of this by getting some cheap gas and maybe a good meal.
Last time I was in Downtown Bellingham, I walked by this place and thought it was intriguing.  Southern comfort food with a good word of mouth so Mr. Piglet and I walk in for a meal.  It's a bar on one side and a dining area with kitchen on the other.  Not much to the decor but we want some good ole food from down South so we don't care what the place looks like.  Let's go!
Bayou Ice Tea - $2.00
Lemon and mint simple syrup
I'm super excited about this drink since it's been a while since I've iced tea where I can add my own syrup (Hong Kong of last last year).  I get the glass, I add some syrup and....  nothing.  It tastes like slightly sweet water.  There is perhaps an inkling of lemon there and no mint is to be detected.  I make sure I'm tasting it right and hand it over to Mr. Piglet and he confirms that it's just kind of sweet water.  Blah.

Jambalaya - $8.75
House smoked tasso, chicken, crawfish, prawns, tomato, cajun spices cooked into rice
Wow, it looks and smells amazing but the portion is quite small and on the website it says this is supposed to come with cornbread but when we order it, we notice that the "comes with cornbread" has been blacked out with a marker.  That sucks.  The jambalaya itself is very good - great balance of tomato flavor and a bit of of that cajun spice.  Several pieces of seafood, lots of chicken and chorizo mixed with perfectly cooked rice.  Mr. Piglet gobbles this down in seconds and we both wax lyrical about how perfect this dish would be, being a bit small, if it had come with cornbread.  So sad...

Oyster Po Boy - $8.75
Taylor shellfish oysters, remoulade, romaine
Giant chunks of oysters in a very crispy batter - I'm impressed since oysters can be hard to deep-fry properly due to their moist nature and this was just super crunchy on the outside and still oystery soft on the inside.  Toppings are plain as is the traditional toppings of a po boy sandwich and the sauce is a bit bland.  The bread is super dense and soft, maybe a bit too soft for this sandwich.  Mr. Piglet and I prefer the traditional baguette that's crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside but no crunch to be found here.  The collard coleslaw is just coleslaw with a few collard greens speckled in - kind of a ruse if you ask me.  Call it what it is - just coleslaw, thank you very much.

Beignet (1/2 order) - $3.00
Savory French doughnuts that are a New Orleans tradition - fried and topped with powdered sugar
Mmmm, fried and topped with powdered sugar...  They come smoking hot to the table but I must have one right away and end up burning the roof of my mouth.  It's a bit denser than I thought it would be but it's still good.  Not as I expected but still good.  Hot, a tad crispy on the outside and denser on the inside.  Mr. Piglet makes a short order of these and polishes them off in minutes.  I'm happy with having a single piece as it can get quite heavy.

Overall, the Hungry Piglets thought the food could be better.  The po boy was a bit bland, the coleslaw wasn't as advertised, the iced tea was just pitiful and beignets for me were a bit on the heavy side.  The Jambalaya on the other hand was really good but too small - if this is meant to fill a medium-sized man for lunch, Bayou on Bay is sadly mistaken.  We probably might check out the bar next door/attached the next time we're in town but I don't think we Piglets will do the sit down again.  If you do decide to go, maybe pick a different po boy to try and stick to the main entrees.  Bon appetite!

Pros:
  • Jambalaya was delicious
  • Free street parking on the weekends
  • Moderate pricing
Cons:
  • Spotty service - ignored for much of the meal but when the server was around, she was nice
  • Jambalaya is too small, especially without the cornbread side
  • Food was overall just ok
