Chop Steakhouse Bar - Richmond, BC

I've just come back from being almost a month and a half away from home and I haven't seen my beloved eating buddy Monkey in too long.  Let's go eat and catch up!  He says he's craving steak and I immediately respond that I don't want to go to the local chain steakhouse (I won't say where but I'm going to call it "The Peg").  He suggests Chop Steakhouse Bar and I'm ok with that - I remember going there for Valentine's Day way back when it was still new and it was pretty good so I don't mind a re-visit.  Meet you there!
Chop Steakhouse Bar is located in the Sandman Signatures Hotel in Richmond and they have 8 locations in total - so I guess it's on the cusp of being a chain restaurant.  And what are they about?  Steak of course!  So what do we order?  Not steak.  Yeah, I know, whatever.

Sangria - on special for $4.99 each
I ordered the white and Monkey had the red.  He must've enjoyed it because it was gone in no time.  I really liked my white sangria - not too busy, lots of fruity flavors and a nice-sized glass.  Another one please!

Onion Rings - $8
Crisp onion rings with white truffle aioli
These are a bit on the pricier side but they are as advertised - uber crispy on the outside and the batter stays on the rings!  I hate it when you take a bite and the entire onion comes out and all you're left with is batter.  I'm not sure what white truffle is supposed to taste like but the aioli is delicious with the rings, much tastier than regular old ketchup.  I'd probably get these rings again as a starter.

Prime Rib (Petite size) - $23.95
First off, the petite size is HUGE!  (That's what she said).  I shudder at what the large size would be like.  After a bite of Monkey's prime rib, I think this is WAY better than steak.  Holy cow this prime rib is juicy and tender!  He says that the prime rib here is better than "The Peg" and I have to agree.  I even like their shaved fresh horseradish better than the watery sauce that you get at "The Peg".  The prime rib also comes with a warm loaded baked potato (with large pieces of real bacon!) and a stuffed tomato thing.  I always hated the way the dishes at "The Peg" looked very empty - there's your steak, there's a side and all of this white space.  The inclusion of the tomato is just nice to fill the large white plate.  The one thing I will give to "The Peg" is that they're double-stuffed baked potato would blow this baked potato out of the water.

Aged White Cheddar Mac and Cheese - $5.95
Ok, Monkey must be hungry because he ordered this on top of his prime rib dinner!  This thing is cheesy and cheesy as heck - it even does that whole stringy cheese bit when you fork some out of the bowl.  I'm really glad Monkey over-ordered because I get to take the leftovers home!  Score!

Chop Salad - $16.95
I decided on the salad over the burger because our server said the burger here was good but she'd had better elsewhere.  The salad?  Well, I've had better elsewhere as well - it's good but not great.  First off, this salad is massive with tons of lettuce, avocado, tomato and meat.  I've honestly never had so much meat on a salad in my life.  Bacon?  Good.  Steak?  Not so much.  The steak is cold and sadly overcooked to the point of chewy and very salty.  Eggs?  No, that should be "egg" because there was only 1 and it was cold and chewy.  The vinaigrette is a very nice balance of sweet, sour and savory.  For this price point, I wish they would have served a variety of lettuce and possibly gone with something organic and I'd even trade some of the bacon and steak for that.  If you absolutely need to get salad, then I'd suggest one of the other salad choices but otherwise, go with a steak or prime rib!

Normally, I don't like hotel food or restaurants attached to hotels but Chop is not bad.  The prices are higher but just about on par with other steakhouses so given the choice, I'd come here rather than the other steak places around.  Just remember to check out the drink specials and order a meat entree rather than a salad to avoid the disappointment!  Bon appetite!
Pros:
  • A lot of comfy seating inside and outside and overall beautiful establishment (they have seating and tv in the bathroom!)
  • Friendly service
  • Free parking
  • Tender/juicy prime rib and great mac and cheese
  • Great drink specials
Cons:
  • Nothing innovative/original or really all that "out-of-the-box"
  • On the pricier side
