Crepes y Waffles - Medellin, Colombia

Burro's mom has decided to bring us to one of her favorite restaurants so head off to....  a mall?  Yup, Medellin is a mall society.  There are three seasons in Medellin - wet, dry and shopping.  People LOVE to walk in malls, especially when it's too hot (aircon is our friend) or when it's monsooning (thank goodness for cover!) and all of the time in-between those environments.  And this mall is pretty impressive with a retractable roof, giant flower display and a gazillion floors and sections.  Nay, we're here for the food.  Take me to some crepes and waffles!
CAW was born in Colombia, the brainchild of a couple university students who wanted to bring some rustic French food into South America.  They reduced prices so that more of the population could eat at their restaurants (without reducing the quality - important!) and if you step inside, you see that the staff are mostly, in not all, female.  According to Burro, CAW likes to employ down-on-their-luck ladies and single mothers in their kitchens and front-of-house.  LOVE!  They have been so successful, they've exported their franchise all over South America and also have plans to go to Europe.  Ok, so they hit the ethical note, but what about the food?



Guanabana jugo en aqua - $4,700 (approx. $2.63)
It's the soursop fruit blended with water and it's absolutely unlike anything I've had before.  Sweet, sour and completely refreshing.  Ahhhhh....

Mango jugo en agua - $4,700 (approx. $2.63)
Fruit here is so just so amazing!  You don't know mango until you've had fresh mango from here and the juice is just as amazing.  So full of flavour and super refreshing.

Bretonne - $10,400 COP (approx. $5.80)
Ham, cheese and egg in French style
Ah, breakfast for dinner.  Giant perfectly cooked crepes (yes, that's a plural), runny over-easy eggs, gooey cheese and a bit of saltiness from the ham.  Yum!

Serrano - $19,900 COP (approx. $11.12)
Mozzarella cheese, prosciutto, caramelized onions and arugula
The crepe was perfectly cooked, the cheese was gooey good, caramelized onions were sweet and the prosciutto is prosciutto - it's always good.  The only problem was the use of arugula since it's so pungent and such a strong lettuce that I found it over-powered some of the other subtle flavors.  Eating it alone was also a bit difficult as it was just arugula and nothing else.  I probably would have gone with another type of side but that's just me.

It's really not the cheapest place to eat in Medellin but it sure is darn good - great service, great food and those fruit juices!  Oh man...  Looking at those photos makes me wanna hop on a flight back!  And I haven't even gotten to the dessert offerings yet!  If you can make it to the many countries in South America that have a Crepes and Waffles location, try to drop by because the food, philosophy and ambiance are worth the visit.  Bon appetite!
