We're in a hurry! I only have 1 hour to eat before I have to go to work and time is a ticking! We quickly pull into the next complex and I remember Teddy mentioning that Coco Hut wasn't bad. Haven't had Malaysian food for a while so we bust in to give it a shot. It feels as though we're on an episode of 24... except there are no bombs, no threats to life, no kidnappings or anything dangerous for that matter. I just want to get to work on time is all. Worst. Episode. Ever.
Only 3 other patrons inside but it's late in the afternoon - and since I was in a hurry, I didn't mind being only 1/3 tables full. So what do they offer? A combo that allows us to pick an appetizer, 2 entrees and 2 drinks for $19.95. Pretty good but they also charge an extra $0.75 for cold drinks (why do they do that????).
Sweet Soy Bean Drink
"It's just sweet soy milk" - Mr. Piglet. Well, what did you think it was??? LOL.
Lemon Tea
Like any lemon tea from any other HK cafe that's just a tad sweeter.
BBQ Satay Skewers (2 beef and 2 chicken)
These skewers taste great - they have a very nice balance of a bit of curry spice but also sweet and savoury. The chicken is super tender and moist despite being grilled on a stick but the beef is another story. It tastes just as good but has been overcooked thus very chewy. Peanut sauce tastes really good with the skewers and the few pieces of marinated carrots and daikon radish are a nice refreshing break for the palate.
Mee Goreng
Fried yellow noodles with a slight sweet and salty soy flavouring and that great umami taste. This one had thin slices of beef, cubes of tofu, bean sprouts, egg and not much else. It tasted really good (Mr. Piglet still talks about it) but the portion size was small and there wasn't a single piece of seafood. Sad!
Laksa Noodle in Soup (Malaysian Vermicelli)
Mmm... this smells so good! I'm usually not a fan of vermicelli, in fact I really don't like it at all, but in this dish because the broth is so good, I don't mind the vermicelli noodles. The broth is hot with a bit of spice and curry notes that I really like. Traditionally there's seafood in the soup and there is in this soup - 1 single shrimp. Sad, no? There's a few pieces of chicken, tofu and some bean sprouts to round out that sad little shrimp. Just a few more pieces of seafood and this would've been perfect. *sigh* C'est la vie!
Overall, for $19.95 for a lunch for two, that's not bad. Everything was ok so don't expect to have your socks blown off but the food is not bad - very simple and tastes like it was made by a mom in the kitchen. If you go in with that mindset, you'll come out pretty happy with your meal. Bon appetite!
Pros:
- Cheaper price point
- Free parking - but it's one of those Richmond lots that might make you go crazy
- Overall ok/tasty food
- Non-existent service
- Dishes were a bit stingy with the ingredients or on the small side
- Cash only
