Liu's Taiwanese Restaurant - Richmond, BC

Mr. Piglet and I have been going to a lot of Taiwanese places lately...  Oh well.  The tummy wants what the tummy wants.  We ended up at Liu's because it was there - I saw the last time I was in the area for bubble tea and it was hidden away in the corner, right beside the atrocity known as Richmond Sushi.  It's not one of those hip and happening places with sexy lighting, loud music or provocatively-dressed servers and the like - just a place to get some Taiwanese food.

Only a few tables full this evening, which is nice because we wanted a quiet meal before the storm of hockey.  A Jay Chou DVD plays on loop on the television while a single screen is showing the Jacksonville/Indianapolis game - Mr and I plop ourselves in front of the football game (we don't know what the heck Jay Chou is singing about) and order some food...

Honey Jasmine Tea - $1.75 with meal
Sorry for the horrible photo - I had some focusing issues that I just gave up on.  LOL.  This drink is really nice on a cold day, especially those who might have a cold (I'm looking at you Mr!).  I think it's a little too sweet so you might want to consider ordering it half sweet.

Wontons in Chili Sauce - $5.25
HEELLLOOOO wontons!  The filling is delicious, wonton skin is nice and thin and there's a nice dollop of green onions and marinated garlic that tastes really good with the wontons.  Mr and I wish the chili sauce was spicier but this milder sauce lets the wonton filling and garlic really come through.  This was the standout dish of the night and we were surprised we liked it so much.  There were 6 wontons in this dish so kind of small even for an appetizer portion size.

Stewed Beef with Noodles in Beef Broth - $7.75
There's much more beef taste in the broth than we've had in other beef noodle soups from other Taiwanese places.  The meat is fall apart tender and the noodles are al dente.  Only two minor things bug me about this dish: the marinated veggies that give the broth a bit of vinegary taste and I wish there was just a bit more vegetables but both very minor issues.  Other than that, both Mr and I enjoyed this dish.

Chicken with Three Special Sauce Set Meal - $9.95
Lots of ginger and garlic flavours - more like two sauce chicken, not three since the basil is completely lost.  Actually, this dish doesn't have much sauce so it should just be called ginger and garlic chicken.  The sides are just marinated carrots and daikon but I like it since it's refreshing for such a savoury chicken dish.

We think this place is above average and have to give thanks to Liu's for introducing us to the wontons and chill sauce combo/dish.  Should you come here?  I think if you've got a hankering for Taiwanese food, this is one of the better places.  Not the best but definitely better than some of the other bubble tea/Taiwanese places we've been to.  You won't be blown away but you won't be disappointed either.  Bon appetite!

Oinks:
  • Food isn't bad - get the wontons!
  • Fast service
  • Not too busy - no waits!
Doinks:
  • Cash only
  • Dead atmosphere - only 2-3 tables full throughout the evening
  • Not very friendly service
