La Tacqueria
The cooks hard at work
So I stumble upon this place as I'm browsing through an online restaurant site called dinehere.ca (for which I also do restaurant reviews) where all of a suddenly, there's a new taco place on the bad side of town that's been making waves. I disregard and then one day, my South American coworker tells me of a taco place called La Tacqueria that his friends have been raving about so, of course, now I have to go see for myself. It is on the outskirts of skid row but I will venture into the depths of Paris Hilton's nether regions for the king of the tacos: the Al Pastor - Chilliwack pork slow cooked in a sauce of chile, achiote and pineapple. This gets the honorable mention but all of the tacos, including pork tongue, have been nothing short of delicious. One taco turned into two, two into three, etc and before we knew it, we piglets had 12 tacos between the two of us! They're not the biggest portions but I did feel very sloth-like afterwards. I have craved authentic Mexican food ever since leaving Mexico and this place is the only place I've ever deigned to call true Mexican outside of Mexico - everything else is the disgusting offshoot called Tex Mex (shudder). This place has been buzzing so much that they've decided to open a second location in a much newer, poshier area. Let's just hope the spirit and the food of La Tacqueria remains intact as it goes through an expansion phase.
