Feastro the Rolling Bistro - Vancouver, BC

I love this Food Cart Festival!  Why?  Because of this!
Feastro the Rolling Bistro (FRB) was started by Paul and Steve, two guys who have a culinary and tourism background who then took their skills and opened this purple truck with an extensive menu.  I first saw this cart on one of the earlier episodes of the Food Network Show Eat St. and they were actually based somewhere on the Sunshine Coast but now they're here!  The Feastro is here!  Well, they're actually located in downtown Vancouver (corner of Thurlow and W. Cordova) and cater to the downtown lunch crew but since they're at this festival, we just have to give it a try!

Freshly Made Watermelon Mint Lemonade - $4
Refreshing?  Yes.  Watermelon?  No.  The mint completely takes over this drink and we're both a bit disappointed since watermelon was what we were sold on and what we were expecting.  There was also a bit of tartness from the lemon but this should have been called Pink Mint Lemonade.

Sweet Potato Fries with Chipotle Aioli - $5.50
This was actually Mr and Mrs Penguin's dish they ordered that we snacked on.  Super crispy fries and the chipotle aioli is just a tinge spicy and super tasty.  The only thing I didn't like about this dish was that it was bit too salty.  Hold back on the salt a bit and this dish would be awesome.

Grilled Albacore Tuna Taco - $8
Star anise chutney, miso aioli, organic greens, wakame, truck pickled ginger and tobiko
OMG this smells so good!!  I fear that might be too much for the delicate taco shell and I'm right - the shell basically disintegrates under the weight of the toppings.  RIP taco shell.  The tuna is perfectly cooked but is lost in the taco and I didn't even know there was a miso aioli.  The ginger, wakame and star anise chutney took over this taco and all of the others took a back seat.  The tuna never stood a chance...  The most disappointing element was the wakame - too much of it, too stringy and too chewy to be enjoyed.  The surprising element of this dish was the tobiko, a nice crunch at the end of the bite - there should be tobiko in more dishes.

Dungeness Crab and Shrimp Cake - $13
Chipotle peppers, coriander, sweet bell peppers on Henry Reed organic greens, vegetable and fruit cornucopia with balsamic reduction, truck smoked cocktail sauce and fresh lemon
HOLY COW!  LOOK AT THIS THING!  When we received this dish, everyone STARED at it.  Well, it's kinda hard not to because this is a massive ball on a plate.  And when they say cornucopia, they mean cornucopia because this salad is just amazing!  There's gooseberries, beets, blueberries, cucumbers, olives, organic greens and on and on!  They had me at the salad.  Mr. Piglet has always been a sucker for a crab cake and he was just amazed by the amount of seafood in this cake - just chunks of crab and shrimp throughout and less filler than we both thought there would be.  Awesome.

The food was okay to excellent - Mr. Piglet would come back for the crab and shrimp cake alone.  The only problem?  This was not a cheap meal - the prices are as if we went to a sit down establishment.  I do give it to FRB that the dishes were probably more elaborate than what I would receive from a restaurant but we still forked over a pretty penny for this lunch.  If you're looking for a "cheap truck meal", just move along and try the next truck because you will be paying a premium (for quality no doubt).  Do expect the wallet to take a hit, try to crab cake and hopefully it's a nice day when you decide to feast at this rolling bistro!  Bon appetite!

Pros:
  • Really good crab and shrimp cake with a really great salad
  • Cash and debit accepted
  • Excellent ingredients used
Cons:

  • Pricey - bring at least a $20 for lunch
  • Lemonade and taco was on the disappointing side
  • Long wait times during prime dining hours
