Yuja Lemonade - $2.75
It's like a lemonade with the taste of something... dates or something. I can't put my finger on it but leaves a bit of a weird tart-ish aftertaste but overall it tastes really good. I find out later that yuja is just pickled yuzu peel - a citrus fruit from SE Asia that looks like a small grapefruit mixed with a mandarin mixed with an orange. Overall, I'd say it was pretty tasty.
12 Hour Braised Beef Tongue - $7.88
The tongue is quite tender with only just a tiny bit of chew. The sauce is savoury and the green onions add that nice twist of taste but it's the pickled jalapenos that gives an extra oomph. Just a nice kick of heat and a little bit of sour and salty from those little jalapenos in every bite just makes this dish go from good to delicious.
Kalbee Osso Bucco - $16.95
It comes with white or multigrain rice?? Multigrain rice please! As you can see, that didn't happen. Mr. Piglet already tore through 3/4s of it before I even noticed. Sneaky sucker... The pork? The softest fall-off-the-bone pork ribs you've ever had but also on the fatty side. It's about a 60/40 ratio of meat to fat and I ended up with a pile of fat on my plate which is a turn-off but at least the meaty parts were tender as heck and super tasty. The sauce is just excellent - a great balance of those spicy, sweet and umami flavours. The kimchi is good but I don't really understand the pickled beans and root - I guess they're there to cleanse the palate but I would have preferred something else with a bit more pizzazz.
Hot Stone Seafood Bibimbop with Spicy Sauce - $13.95
The bowl wasn't hot enough to give that nice crust that bibimbop usually does. With the previous places I've been where they've served this dish, the server would then mix it tableside for you so you get that nice crispy rice but alas, not here at DMK. Before I even noticed that it wasn't done, the bowl had already lost some of that crucial sizzling heat. It's a good bibimbop but I've had better elsewhere. It was good, but not amazing. On the flip side, it's the best place with the word "modern" in it that's for sure. All of the dishes were very good but also had some basic flaws. I think what DMK does do that knocks people out of the ballpark is their late hours - open until 2:30 am EVERY NIGHT. That's amazing! Great place for those night owls and a good stumbling spot when all you want after 5 beers/whatever is a good bowl of saucy rice. I'd take this place over the 24 hour chain place anytime of day. Bon appetite!
Pros:
- Open late night
- Accepts reservations
- Pretty good food
- Small place - prepare for a wait during prime dining hours without reservations
- Portion sizes are a bit smaller so it can get pricey if you're looking for a full meal
